We recently had the pleasure of working with a client on a Northern Virginia bathroom remodel — which turned out to be one of three bathroom remodels — and a kitchen! — that we completed in this home. Bathrooms are often overlooked when it comes to design, but they can make an incredible impact on the comfort and style of your home.
For this Northern Virginia bathroom renovation, our client wanted to reconfigure a cramped, outdated full bath on the first floor to create a powder room that felt light, functional, and more tailored to their lifestyle. Because we were adding a full bathroom to the second floor primary bedroom, the full bath on the first level was no longer needed. Reconfiguring the space would also allow some of the original bathroom space to be incorporated into the adjoining kitchen.
It’s important to focus on both aesthetics and function as you start planning for your Northern Virginia remodel. Questions to consider include:
For this project, we started by rethinking the floor plan to eliminate the shower and open up the room. The space that was saved by removing the shower would also add to the square footage of the kitchen next to it.
The goal was also to update the bathroom while maintaining the classic feel of the colonial home. We decided to add some interest with millwork on the walls, with wallpaper installed above the millwork and on the ceiling.
The client, who loves the color blue, wanted to replace the existing dated wallpaper with something bright and cherry to attain a fresh, crisp feel. We settled on patterned Priano wallpaper in navy and white from Serena and Lily. It’s cheerful and a bit whimsical, and the powder room was the perfect place to have a bit of fun.
Classic black and white tile and timeless fixtures — in both black and polished nickel — added warmth without overwhelming the small space. A woven wood window shade added some texture in addition to privacy.
The result? A charming bathroom that feels bright and airy, yet practical for everyday use, proving that thoughtful design can transform even the smallest spaces. If you’re thinking about a Northern Virginia bathroom remodel and want someone to guide you through the process, we’d love to hear from you.
